Ice Candles

My favourite winter camp idea is ice candles.

To make the candles:

  • have each girl fill a four inch balloon with water.
  • tie the balloon closed and place them outside over night.
  • the next morning have the girls break the balloon with the tip of a knife.
  • the latex should peel away easily.
  • once the ice is completely free of the balloon, take a kettle of hot water and pour very slowly down the center of the ice globe.
    • pour slowly and in one area only to ensure a circular hole into the centre of the globe.
  • once the hole is into the globe's centre, place a tealight into each candle.
  • once darkness falls, have the girls light their candles.

The ice globes can be used to light a path to your campfire or to mark your campsite for parents to find.

If you enjoy colour, add a few drops of food colour to the water after you have filled the balloons.

The ice globes will stay frozen for weeks if you try this at home.

As for camp, have the girls leave them in place for another group to see.
