Pop Bottle Cap Wind Chime

Materials:

  • 25 pop bottle caps (3 pink, 4 orange, 7 blue, 6 green, 3 yellow, 2 red- you may have to paint some)
  • 56 beads from old seat covers
  • plastic lacing
  • 3" to 4" plastic lid (such as from instant coffee or peanut butter)
  • 1 plastic or metal ring

    Getting started:

  • drill 5 holes around the outside of the large lid
  • drill a hole in the middle of each pop bottle lid

    Making the wind chime:

  • Cut the lacing into the following lengths- 22 1/2", 23 1/2", 241/2",25 1/2", & 26 1/2"
  • tie a bell to each length of lacing
  • starting with your shortest length of lacing, string on the beads and strings as follows (thread each lace end from the bottom of the lid to the top, so the lid is facing down):
      • 1 bead, pink lid, 2 beads, pink lid, 2 beads, pink lid, 2 beads
      • 1 bead, orange lid, 2 beads, orange lid... for a total of 4 lids
      • 1 bead, blue lid, 2 beads, blue lid... for a total of 5 lids
      • 1 bead, green lid, 2 beads, green lid...for a total of 6 lids
      • 1 bead, yellow lid, 2 beads, blue lid, 2 beads, red lid, 2 beads, yellow lid, 2 beads, blue lid, 2 beads, red lid, 2 beads, yellow lid, 2 beads
  • take the lace end by the bell and work it into the beads and trim it off
  • take each string of lids and beads and string them onto the large lid, threading each lace from the bottom of the lid to the top, being sure to put them in order of length.
  • thread all laces through the last bead
  • thread all laces through the ring
  • tie a knot and cut extra lacing off or try to work into the hole in the bead if possible.

    This isi a great recycling craft and can be made by all ages of Guiding. We did this at a District camp. I srayed all the bottle caps ahead of time and drilled all the holes. I had them pre-packaged into kits for them.

    For the Sparks and Brownies I pre-tied the bells onto the lacing. I made enough kits for 120 people.

    It was really neat seeing girls of all ages sitting and doing the craft!
