Bright Ideas - Program
Flag PolesYou can make flags and poles for your girls' patrols that work just like the real ones. Cut flag poles for them about 4 feet high (broomsticks, curtain rods or pvc conduit all work well.) A stand can be as simple as a foot long piece of 4x4 with a 1-1.5" hole drilled through it. Have the girls make patrol flags, sew a small wooden dufflecoat button to a loop at the top of the flag and sew a length of cord to the bottom of it on the halyard side. You can get tiny cleats and pulleys -- for raising and lowering hanging plants -- at the hardware store; just attach them to the pole with wire and epoxy and your girls have a fantastic jr. flagpole. The girls can now see how the pulley must be fed (and see how it gets tangled when it isn't done properly!)and can practice easily and often. This way, any dropping of flags, disintegrating or permenant knots and other disasters take place in the comfort and privacy of the patrol area, where even the top of the pole is within easy reach of the girls themselves. When it comes time to do the Canadian Flag at camp, your girls will be able to raise it with confidence and dignity. Gaenor B Back to Bright Ideas - Program main page Back to Bright Ideas main page
