Bright Ideas - Program

First Experiment

2 balloons - latex, coloured
1 candle
lighter
water

**have an adult do this part -
ask what the girls think is going to happen when you hold the balloon
over the lit candle (encourage the girls to stand back a couple of feet
- I am doing this on a kitchen counter beside a sink with a pot of water
beside me for safety
now blow the first balloon up, tie it off, hold over the lit candle and
it should 'pop'

*now fill the 2nd balloon up with water, blow it up & tie it off
again - ask the girls what they think will happen

now hold the balloon over the flame and voila - nothing!!
why because the water in the balloon holds the heat of the candle which
deflects the poppin gof the balloon

Second experiment

put a 5 dollar bill on the floor in front of socked feet
ask the girl to hold their toes and try to jump over the money without
falling
cant be done - due to centrivical force

Third experiment

have a leader sit straight up on a chair flat against the wall
feet flat on the floor
hands flat on their lap

now have a spark point their finger at the leader's forehead
now place fingertip on leader's forehead and have the leader stand
straight up
cant be done - centrival force grounds you

Fourth experiment/challenge

get 2L pop bottle
cut in half carefully - have adult preprep this
now turn pour spout on top half upside down INTO the bottom part of the
bottle
now drop a marble into the bottle (you can tape the bottles together for
little hands)
have the girl try to get the marble out of the bottle by spinning it
can be done - my 5 year old does it quite a bit
4 year old still trying hard on it

Fifth challenge/experiment

get a couple of trays
20 ice cubes per two girls
place four ice cubes into cube
have the girls share the remainder of the ice
now each must stack the remaining ice cubes into a tower without sliding
off
good luck -

will be bringing my camera for the fun tonight but my two kids have been
having a blast today trying to do all fo the above noted challenges and
were still have about 10 more up my sleeve
will do the egg into a bottle come easter - cant wait to the see their
eyes!1 ;-)
