007 Camp

Camp Woods headquarters for Girl Guide camp

Special to Sylvan Lake News

Girl Guides and Pathfinders from throughout Alberta, as well as one group from Ontario converged at Camp Woods last week for a few fun filled days of mingling, forming new friendships and participating in a variety of activities.
Close to 300 girls attended the camp near Sylvan Lake, called 007-A Chance to Bond, held July 29 to Aug. 5.
The camp consisted of several patrols, with eight girls and two guiders in each patrol, set up in one of three villages. The girls in each village were identified by different coloured hats: green for FBI, blue for CIA and red for MI6.
The camp program was designed to challenge participants to explore activities such as swimming and canoeing, archery, orienteering, geocaching, fishing, large gadget making and personal development.
The theme, 007-A Chance to Bond, was an integral part of the eight-day outdoor experience, giving participants a chance to have fun sharpening their decoding skills and enjoying a little mystery and intrigue.
Responsible Guider Pat McWilliams, who is overseeing the camp along with Enidd Isaac, said the camp gave the girls a chance to enjoy the camping experience on a provincial level.
“It’s a way to prepare them for larger events which will take place in 2010 as that is our 100th year anniversary of Guiding in Canada.”
McWilliams said the camp was a great experience.
“We love it here. This is such a lovely facility and Scouts Canada has been so good to us in helping to meet our needs.”
Experiencing the beauty of the northern lights one night was an experience the girls will, no doubt, remember for many years to come.
“It was like magic and not something you see in the city,” said McWilliams.
While at the camp, Guides had an opportunity to leave the site and visit the waterslide in Sylvan Lake, go out for a meal and go to the Lacombe Corn Maze.
McWilliams said they were treated well while in town.
“The response was very warm towards them. We had lots of good feedback.”
Pathfinder leader Kate Johnston gave the organizers kudos for making the camp experience top notch.
“There are things all day for the girls to do. It’s just fantastic, there’s something for everyone.”
Guides from Ontario said they were impressed with the camp, the weather and the opportunity to meet new people.
