Science and Technology

Welcome to the Science and Technology site for Alberta Girl Guides!

This year let's get more of the girls doing hands-on Science and Technology. It is already happening!

Arrowhead Area organized an impressive Science Rally in Millet in February 2005 for over 100 girls, leaders and parents (see their notes and article and publicity !). Girls performed a myriad of Sci/Tech activities, including: GIS mapping, solving murders with DNA sequencing, and learning about their senses.

Their tools for success? Other than hardwork by organizers and other volunteers - here is what they used:

And you can do this too, even if on a smaller scale! Checkout the Alberta and Guiding and Other Sci/Tech links below.

If you have other success stories or suggestions, ideas or comments you'd like to share - please contact Alberta Girl Guides !

Guiding SciTech Websites:
Alberta-wide Kits/Outreach/Resources:
  • Science Alberta’s Science-in-a-crate – for $25 you can have a large crate full of science activities. Since many schools already use the curriculum crates, you might want to look at the Community or Camp Crates developed just for groups like Girl Guides.
  • Operation Minerva (Calgary, Southern Alberta, Northern Alberta)
  • Let's Talk Science - Has a searchable database of activities for girls of all ages. They also offer programs to visit your meeting.
  • Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscience in Alberta (APEGGA) offers Alberta-wide outreach by volunteers
  • Actua - lists hand-on summer Science and Technology camps across Canada (including some all-girl camps), and offers an online project library.
  • SCIberMENTOR – allows girls aged 11-18 to e-mail questions to women active in engineering and science.
Area-specific SciTech Resources
Fun Sites and Other Resources:
  • Alberta Women’s Science Network - Comprehensive list of science-related links by category.
  • WISE – links to interesting science sites for kids.
  • Plantwatch – get outside and study flowering times of plants; website has step-by-step activities for all ages e.g. how to gather data and calculate latitude and longitude.
  • Inventive Kids - A Canadian website that presents information on women inventors. Lots of online activities for kids, and links to numerous other sites with information for budding inventors.
  • Science Toys - cool activities for science toys you can make at home with the kids
  • YES Mag : Canada's Science Magazine For Kids is for kids ages 8-14. and has hands-on projects
